BASIC INFORMATION

What is Cohousing?

  • Cohousing was created in the 70's to help revive community in neighborhoods. There are already hundreds of cohousing communities in the U.S.
  • Our cohousing neighborhood fosters community and cooperation while preserving privacy and independence.
  • We plan, design and manage our own community.
  • We each own a private, self-sufficient home on a private lot.
  • We share a common house, greenhouse, community garden, workshop, etc and open space for socializing, gardening, play, and wilderness.
Cohousing lets you live in a safe and friendly neighborhood of your own design.

Why Cohousing?

Let's face it, neighborhoods just aren't what they used to be. The close ties that were once common are now rather rare.

Modern housing developments are designed to offer plenty of privacy, but almost no community. In this age of the automobile, we drive right past our neighbors' homes without ever saying "Hello", let alone becoming close friends.

Heartwood is a cohousing community where our neighbors have become close friends. In 1998, we purchased a beautiful 250 acre nature preserve and clustered 24 homes on 7 acres. In January, 2000 the first members moved in.

Where we Live?

  • On 250 acres of Ponderosa, Juniper & Pinon forests, meadows, and irrigated pastures.
  • In Southwest Colorado, only a few minutes to Bayfield and about 20 minutes east of Durango.
  • On land with great gardening, solar access, and solitude.

We invite you to come live with us in this beautiful and peaceful preserve.

What Makes Us Different from Traditional Cohousing?

In truth, our vision of community is very consistent with "traditional" cohousing. We do differ in a few areas. We have a strong commitment to build and live in an environmentally responsible community. We are located in a rural setting rather than an urban or suburban one. We have employed the Mixed Development Model, which means there are homes that were built as part of a development and others that were custom-designed by their owners. In either case, everyone owns a share of the common facilities and open space.
