What is Cohousing?

Cohousing was created in Denmark the 1970's to help revive community in neighborhoods. In the 1980’s it was introduced to the United States.  There are now hundreds of cohousing communities in the U.S., either already built or under development.

Cohousing neighborhoods are designed to foster community and cooperation while preserving privacy and independence.  As cohousing residents, we all share a desire and intention to live in close connection with our neighbors.  We planned, designed, and now manage our own community.  We each own a private home on a private lot.  And we share a great many amenities including common house, greenhouse, community garden, workshop, yurt, hen house, tractor, tennis court, and 350 acres of open space.

For more information about the cohousing "bible" called COHOUSING: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves, check out the The Cohousing Company.  (We have copies of this book to borrow from the common house library.)  The book was written by the husband and wife team of Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett.  The video below presents Kathryn talking about cohousing.
