Common House Orientation

11/06/08

Kids

Kids need to have an adult as a check-in to be in the common house.  That means that the adult is responsible for the kids’ behavior and messes.  The adult check-in goes over to the common house after the kids are done playing to make sure things are cleaned up.

During meals the dining room is only for eating and quiet conversation.  Any playing, running, screaming, or other loud or rowdy behavior should be taken outside or downstairs to the rec room.  Kids should not take dishes out of the common house — the terrace is OK, but not beyond that.

No pillow fights or jumping or standing on the couches in the rec room.  The Hearth room is only for quiet, mellow activities.  Children must have an adult present who is responsible for them to use the kitchen or exercise room.

Entry & Mail Room

People are generally expected to remove their shoes in the common house.  Many members keep slippers in the shoe cubbies in the entry to wear in the common house.

Mail service is usually in mid-afternoon.  Incoming mail is put in your mailbox with the brass door.  Packages are put in the lower, far right cabinet.  Outgoing mail goes in the cabinet door slot under mailboxes.

There’s a set of wooden cubbies to the right of the mailboxes for you to store little things that you want to leave in the common house and also for the exchange of notes, etc amongst members.

Library & Hearth Room

You may check out books from the library in the Hearth room by signing it out in the library notebook.  If you want to donate a book to the library, it should be one that you think others will enjoy.  If you want it back, put your name in it.  Periodically the books will be cleared out (given away) to make room for new ones.

Feel free to build a fire if you’d like.  There should be kindling and firewood on the hearth.  If there’s none there, there should be some on the back deck (just out the door by the bathroom).  Be sure to open the flue before lighting the fire.  Please come back the next day after the fire is completely out to make sure the flue is closed.

Laundry

You’re welcome to keep laundry soap, etc. on the shelves by the laundry room door.  Mark yours with your name or house number.  Mark the number of washer and dryer loads that you run on the tally sheet by the laundry room window.  The charges will show up on your HOA invoice.  Please make sure to empty all pockets and otherwise keep foreign nasties out of the washers and dryers.  They do lots of damage.  There are little magnet signs for the washers indicating whether to put the finished load in a dryer or not.  If the sign says “No Dry” or there is no sign and the load is done, simply put the load in a basket or on a table.  If the sign says “Dry Please”, then please put it in a dryer and run it.  There’s a community clothes line behind the common house that you’re welcome to use.

Stereo, Home Theater, and DVD Library

The stereo is located in the little hall between the dining room and the bathroom.  There are numerous speakers located throughout the common house that can be run from that stereo.  To work the stereo, just follow the directions on the laminated instruction sheet that should be on the stereo shelves.

The home theater is in the rec room.  Again, there should be a laminated instruction sheet on the shelf next to the home theater.

The DVD library is located on the built-in shelves in the rec room.  Feel free to check out DVD’s.  Please return them within 2 weeks.  If you donate a video to the library and you want it back, please put your name on it.

Guest Rooms

We have 2 guest rooms available for you and your guests.  There is no fee required of members’ guests, but donations are welcome.  Guest rooms can be reserved on the online community calendar.  See the Reserving a Guest Room page for detailed information on how to reserve a guest room.

Heartwood Coop Food Store

The store features mostly locally grown, organic food at very competitive prices.  Anyone can buy from the store.  It is generally open on Tuesday afternoons.
