Strawbale, Passive Solar Duplex
This home was built by a caring, dedicated builder: interior plasters, exterior plasters, trim, floors, carpet, tile, and cabinets are constructed entirely of natural and earth materials. Interior dimensions, 1340 sq. ft.
The structure has strawbale walls, post-and-beam framing made of locally harvested Ponderosa, passive solar design, double-pane, wood-finished windows, and radiant heat in the floors.
The building has two-stories.
- First floor: Open, bright, living-dining-kitchen area; ½ bath with washer hook-up, utility room, and foyer.
- Second floor: Open, bright living/play/office area in center, two small rooms on one side (I use one for a guest room and one for storage), master bedroom with walk-in closet, and a full bath.
- A crawl space is accessible from the utility room, which also houses the two water heaters that provide domestic hot water and hot water for radiant heat.
- The home also includes a carport with storage area.

Stickbuilt, passive solar duplex
Our 1567 square foot southwest mountain rustic home has 2 stories plus a
basement, and enjoys passive solar heat all winter long. It has a great
E-Star rating of 85. Fully landscaped yard and drought-resistant
perennials in back, with drip irrigation system hooked up to Heartwood
irrigation. Apple and other deciduous trees in sideyard. The home is
backed by a pinion and juniper forest that is a part of Heartwood.
First floor: open and airy, the kitchen and dining room face south to
the common pathway. Sunlight streams in during the winter, and you will
enjoy cool breezes in the summer. There are solid wood kitchen (and
bathroom) cabinets, and 18 inch ceramic tile floor. The kitchen includes
an island that serves for eating as well as cooking. There is an awesome
pantry in the kitchen, and a mud room as well, tucked into the entry corner.
The kitchen area opens into the 2-story living room, with huge windows
to the side yard and back deck, and a door leading out to the deck. To
the right is the first floor full bathroom and the first floor bedroom.
Second floor: The second floor has the large master bedroom suite with
ceiling fan, complete with its own full bath. We have used this room as
our bedroom as well as a large office, big enough for two desk suites
with room left over. The third bedroom and third bath are also on the
second floor.
Basement: A full, 832 sq. ft. unfinished basement, with two large
windowbox-type window wells for great sunlight and easy exit. We house
our freezer, washer and dryer in the basement, with plenty of room left
over for storage. Many have finished their basements and created family
rooms and extra bedrooms – you have so many options!
Carport: Full carport with decking above for extra storage, and a full
height storage closet at the end.
Appliances include a gas stove, a refrigerator with ice maker, and an
inline RO water system in the kitchen.
And then there is Heartwood itself…
As is true for all homes in Heartwood, home ownership also conveys
ownership (together with the other Heartwood owners) of 361 acres of
forest and irrigated pastures, a 4,000 square foot common house with
commercial-size kitchen, dining room, guest rooms, rec room, exercise
room, and more. There is an organic garden and greenhouse, as well as a
henhouse, with a barn in the future plans. Heartwood is a child’s (and
parents’) dream, with caring neighbors, plenty of room to run and play
safely, and a play structure in the center of the community, the S.S.
Ponderosa. You will also enjoy the community hot tub, tennis court,
basketball court, skateboard park, and more than three miles of hiking
trails… all on your property.
