At an elevation of 7000 feet, Heartwood Cohousing straddles two distinct southern Rocky Mountain life zones: Pinon-Juniper Woodlands (generally between 5000 ft and 7000 ft) and Ponderosa Pine Forests (generally between 7000 ft and 9000 ft). And because we also have irrigation water, we enjoy quite a variety of trees, grasses, flowers, crops, wildlife, and domestic animals.
Our 24 homes are clustered along a pedestrian pathway on just a few acres in the middle of our land. All of our homes are passive solar, very energy efficient, and built in large part with sustainably harvested lumber. We have many strawbale homes, a few straw clay homes, one pumicecrete home, and many super-insulated stick built homes.
At the center of our neighborhood is our common house and terrace, village green, and kids’ play structure. On the edge of the cluster are the parking lots, workshop, skateboard park, play field, greenhouse, orchard, gardens, henhouse, and trailheads to over 3 miles of trails. A short walk through the village green and into the woods brings you to the hot tub. Walk a few minutes to the northeast and you come to the tennis and basketball court. To the southwest in the Ponderosa Pine forest is the yurt and sledding hill. Or just up Raven Ridge are the bonfire circle, labyrinth, and ceremonial circle.
