Steering Team
Revised 01/16/25
It is the job of the Nominating Task Force (NTF) to prepare a proposed slate for the new Steering Team each year. The task force works in conjunction with the community to shepherd the process of selecting the Steering Team.
The Steering Team solicits a Nominating Task Force by January 31. As part of this solicitation, Steering Team should define what the task force is and what the process generally looks like. This is done via email to the Biz chat, and copies the relevant information from the Steering Team section of Teams Agreement as well as this guideline.
The NTF process is consistent with the Teams Agreement. While the inherent nature of the task force is that it will be discussing specific individuals in the community (which always has the possibility of some stickiness), the NTF process should be an open one. As such:
It’s highly suggested that the NTF has a meeting with potential ST members (both new and returning) to ask them how they see themselves serving on the team. This is best done before a Steering Team slate is posted to the community.
When the NTF has determined a Steering Team slate, the NTF should post this to the community Biz chat by the last day of February. There are two ways that this can be done, and the NTF should carefully consider which of these to use:
When the final ST slate is posted to the community, it must follow the procedures outlined in the Finance Team Resource on Steering Team Transition.

As such:
- Once formed the NTF should announce to the community Biz chat who is on the task force.
- NTF members should join the NTF chat.
- The NTF should send a query to the community Biz chat soliciting volunteers for the Steering Team. As timing is often an issue, this should be done as quickly as possible after the task force forms.
- The NTF can also directly solicit potential ST members.
- NTF communication should take place on the NTF chat instead of via individual emails.
- NTF meetings should be open and posted to the community Biz chat.
- Minutes of NTF meetings should be taken and posted to the community Biz chat.
- If the NTF expects smooth sailing for the slate, it can use a Posted Decision.
- If the NTF expects that it might be a more challenging process, they should use a Straw Poll first.
When the final ST slate is posted to the community, it must follow the procedures outlined in the Finance Team Resource on Steering Team Transition.
