Phase 2 Homes will be Certified under the
Department of Energy's Zero Energy Ready Homes Program
Department of Energy's Zero Energy Ready Homes Program
Zero Energy Ready Homes (ZERH) represent a holistic approach to building homes that minimize energy consumption and maximize comfort. ZERH homes are designed to be so efficient that a renewable energy system, like solar panels, could offset all or most of the home's annual energy use, resulting in net-zero energy consumption. The program's emphasis on environmental sustainability make it a natural fit for Heartwood.

The Life Cycle of a Zero Energy Ready Home (2 minutes)

Earning the DOE Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) certification is a rigorous process. We must meet strict energy efficiency guidelines verified by an independent third-party energy auditor. This includes inspections and performance testing to ensure the homes meet the program's high standards. For homebuyers, this certification provides assurance that the home is built to the highest levels of energy efficiency, comfort, and indoor air quality. It's a guarantee of quality construction and future energy savings and provides confidence in the home's performance claims. |
So, what makes a ZERH home special?
- Thermal Enclosure System: Thick insulation in walls, roofs, and floors and advanced framing techniques significantly reduce heat transfer, keeping the home cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
- High-Performance Windows: Advanced windows with multiple panes, low-E coatings, and insulated frames minimize heat gain and loss.
- Tight Construction: Air sealing techniques prevent drafts and air leaks, reducing energy waste and improving indoor air quality.
- Efficient HVAC Systems: High-efficiency heating and cooling systems (air source heat pumps, Zehnder ERV's etc.) provide optimal comfort with minimal energy use.
- High-Efficiency Lighting and Appliances: Zero Energy Ready Homes are outfitted with appliances that meet ENERGY STAR specifications and LED lighting systems.
- Water Efficiency: Water-saving fixtures and appliances reduce water consumption and associated energy use for water heating.
- Solar-Ready Design: The home is built ready for the easy installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Carports are built ready for the easy installation of an electric vehicle (EV) charging system .
What are the benefits to the homeowner?
- Environmental Responsibility: Reducing energy consumption contributes to a smaller carbon footprint, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and a more sustainable future.
- Healthier Indoor Air: Tighter construction, improved ventilation systems, and adherence to the EPA’s Indoor airPLUS standards lead to better indoor air quality, reducing allergens and pollutants.
- Wildfire Resilience: Air sealing and airtight construction have been shown to significantly contribute to a home’s survival during fires. Airtight homes prevent embers and smoke from penetrating the structure.
- Enhanced Comfort: Consistent temperatures, minimal drafts, and improved indoor air quality create a more comfortable living environment.
- Lower Energy Bills: Significantly reduced energy costs save you money every month.
- Lower Up Front Cost: Tara Development will earn a $5000 tax credit for each ZERH certified home. Certification is estimated to cost about $2000 per home. Any net savings will be passed along to the homebuyer.
- Increased Home Value: ZERH homes are becoming increasingly desirable, potentially increasing home resale value.
